Nova Celebration Display

If there’s a performance Vauxhall that’s held its own through the good times and bad, then the Nova is it. A mainstay of the Griffin tuning scene ever since the model’s launch in 1983, the Chevette’s replacement was the chariot of choice for successive generations of modifiers, gaining it notoriety during the mid-1990s for eagerly wearing outlandish fibreglass body kits and retina-scalding paint jobs which did little to promote the car’s qualities as a seriously good hot hatch with masses of performance potential.

Badged as the Corsa A outside of the UK, the Nova’s popularity among all demographics ensured it a healthy decade-long production run. In fact, Nova sales remained strong during the entire time the model was a feature of main dealer showrooms, but as the 1990s progressed, many European manufacturers ditched the sharp, angular appearance of their compact cars for softer, rounder shapes, hence the Nova’s facelift at the turn of the decade. Revised factory design direction eventually extended to the discontinuation of the Nova and the introduction of the Corsa B, an answer to questions raised by Ford, Peugeot and Renault’s assault on the supermini sector.

Built at Opel’s Zaragoza assembly plant, the Nova came in a range of iconic performance trim, including SR, SRi, GSi, GTE and the legendary Sport Pack. While these variants – coupled with high-profile professional race and rally success – proved Vauxhall was doing a great job of presenting the Nova as a fabulously fast pocket rocket, the aftermarket tuning scene was upping the ante in sensational style; Courtenay Sport equipped a Nova with the turbocharged two-litre C20LET engine ordinarily found beneath the bonnet of a Cavalier or Calibra Turbo. Immediately famous, the green Griffin changed the Vauxhall tuning scene forever and continues to spawn hundreds of copycat builds.

Many Novas were abused by careless pilots, treatment that sent a large number of the nippy Vauxhall to the great scrapyard in the sky. Fortunately, there was always a strong collective of owners who recognised their car’s future status as a modern classic, a realisation which ensured a significant number of Novas have survived in excellent order. This die-hard group has also been largely responsible for ensuring a wealth of high quality aftermarket tuning gear has been developed and remains in production for the model, a car which was offered as a hatchback with three or five doors, and as a saloon with two or four.

In recognition of the Nova’s thirty-fifth birthday, we’ve handpicked a selection of fantastic former Performance Vauxhall feature cars to display on a special celebration stand. The 310bhp Porsche-painted three-door built by Kev Raynes, Ben Hone’s enduringly popular Arden Blue beast, Ian Pepper’s 392bhp sprint star, Johnny Haw’s immaculate SR replica and Chris Dodd’s Glacier White wonder are just some of the Novas regular readers will be familiar with. Vectra GSi Celebration Stand

This time, we’re celebrating two decades of Vectra GSi. That’s right – twenty years! Time flies almost as fast as a Vauxhall powered by an MSD-fettled V6.

As the successor to the Mk3 Cavalier, the Vectra B had a lot to live up to. It’s worth noting that in keeping with time honoured tradition, Vauxhall didn’t care much for Opel’s choice of designation for the Vectra A; instead of towing GM's party line, the big wigs in Luton chose to stick with the Cavalier name until 1995, at which point the newer car arrived in British main dealer showrooms wearing the Vectra badge. As had been suggested by introduction of the Opel-originated Corsa marque to UK dealers two years earlier, the enforced use of the Vectra moniker signalled GM’s intent to standardise the names of many models it was selling across multiple territories.

The Cavalier didn’t go out quietly, though. At the hands of works motorsport legend, John Cleland, the still-revered Vauxhall won the 1995 British Touring Car Championship after being phased out of production! Buyers heading to main dealers in the hope of bagging a roadgoing example of the Griffin they’d just watched scream to victory were out of luck, although a comprehensively developed, carbon-fibre filled version of the Vectra B they were being offered by showroom salesmen would go on to compete in the BTCC a few months later.

Sporty street versions of the Vectra B inspired by the BTCC included the GSi. Developed in Milton Keynes by MSD and wearing a distinctive body kit featuring a rear wing, chunky side skirts and prominent grilles on each side of the lower bumper, the model was equipped with a breathed-on version of GM’s torquey 2.5-litre 54° V6 engine and a host of other upgrades, including special Recaros and tidy alloys.

It’s thought that fewer than 3,900 GSis were built first time around. Primarily a mix of hatchback and saloons, the number was also made up of a smidge over 300 tourers. Finding any surviving Vectra B GSi in good order today is difficult enough, but the GSi-kitted wonder wagon is recognised for being one of the rarest Vauxhalls ever manufactured.

GM replaced the 2.5-litre six-shooter with a 2.6-litre powerplant for the 2001 model year. The GSi – by now benefitting from a facelift – was offered with extra stopping power to complement increased displacement. Meanwhile, development work for the Vectra C was well underway, which meant a low number of 2.6-litre GSis were built (production volume is not thought to have exceeded 500 units) before the Vectra B made way for its successor in 2002.

Behind the scenes, work was taking place in readiness for the launch of the VXR brand, which meant cars in Vauxhall’s GSi range were considerably toned down. The Vectra C GSi, for example, exhibited understated looks not at all in keeping with the rowdy body kits of yore (angry styling was being reserved for the 2.8-litre turbocharged Vectra VXR). On the plus side, it featured a 3.2-litre V6 delivering close to 210bhp. If you were looking for an enjoyable driving experience (trust us when we say these old-school V6s are terrific engines) in an understated package, then the Vectra C GSi was the car for you.

Corsa 25th Anniversary Celebration Stand

This year’s Performance Vauxhall Show will play host to a special display of Corsas in celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of what is one of Vauxhall’s best-loved models. We’ll be presenting ten outstanding examples of the ground-breaking supermini, ranging from a spotless Corsa B SRi through to heavily modified Corsa E VXRs.

In 1993, Britpop was getting ready to unleash its full force, Bill Clinton was sworn in as the forty-second President of the United States and the Maastricht Treaty took effect, formally establishing the European Union. In the motoring world, all eyes were on Vauxhall, a company ready to launch the successor to the fantastically popular Nova.

Opel had been using the Corsa name for years. Indeed, Nova is the UK designation for what the majority of the world knows as the Corsa A (Barina in Australia), but fearing the model’s name sounded too much like ‘coarser’, the lads in Luton decided to go their own way. A decade later, they relented, and the Corsa name was finally introduced to Britain with the launch of the Nova’s replacement.

A car which to this day remains almost as popular as its predecessor, the Corsa B was followed by a sharper, hotter hatch in the form of the Corsa C. The new arrival was consistently one of the best-selling cars in the UK during its time in production. It also proved to be a big hit with modifiers, but all things must pass, and a new generation of Griffins comprising cars ready to unlock their full performance potential was waiting in the wings. Enter the Corsa D.

A rethinking of the Corsa concept, Vauxhall’s updated compact car was soon presented in full fat, super-aggressive VXR trim with a 1.6-litre turbocharged powerplant, lightweight body panels, bulging wheel arches, race seats and a centre-exit exhaust. Later, Nürburgring Edition and Clubsport VXRs would set pulses racing. Today, the Corsa D VXR is one of the Vauxhall scene’s most enthusiastically tuned models, and one which paved the way for the recently discontinued Corsa E VXR, a comparatively short-lived – but no less impressive – take on the idea of a Vauxhall hot hatch providing the perfect platform for modifying.

You’ll find a fantastic selection of modified Corsas spanning all ages on our celebration stand. Regular readers will recognise the tuned 1.6-litre SRi owned by Sam Thomas and Adam Beard’s 1000bhp twin-engined monster as former Performance Vauxhall feature stars representing the earliest generation of UK cars badged as Corsas, while Dave Green’s supercharged 2.2-litre Corsa C will sit alongside heavily tuned VXRs, such as Rhys Morgan’s Carbon Flash track attacker and Jay Handbury’s slammed pink camo-wrapped wonder. Be sure to check ‘em out when they’re assembled close to the Performance Vauxhall magazine stand, where you’ll also be able to point your peepers at the C20XE-powered, Porsche rim-riding, Cadbury Purple-painted Corsa B built by Tom Parkes.

The Photography UK stand can be found in the heart of the Retail Village - if your car is in the show, your picture will be in there! With on-site printing facilities, Photography UK will be offering 9x6-inch and 12x8-inch, framed and unframed, copies of your arrival photo to take away with you as a memento of the day. The same images can also be ordered to be printed on a coffee mug, phone case or one of several types of key rings on offer. After the show, all images will be available to view on the Photography UK website, where you’ll be able to order a selection of products, and also find images from previous shows - www.photography-uk.com
